Design trail for V&A Museum and CETLD, February 2008

The project involves the development and evaluation of web-based trails which design students in higher education can use to explore the museum’s collections. These trails use the ‘iGuides from StreetAccess’ software programme and are accessed in the V&A’s galleries on Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs).

In collaboration with Simone Brewster.

Work in Progress

Here is a movie of a work in progress piece made in November 2006. This is one of the earlier pieces in the making of the woven task light that is now on show in the Aram Gallery. The idea was to use a material that guided the light through its vains to the destination of choice. This piece is a hand woven tube made out of black sleeved fibre optic.

'New Moves' exhibition at The Aram Gallery, 20 September - 03 November 2007

New Moves is an exhibition, curated by Daniel Charny at The Aram Gallery in Covent Garden, featuring 70 new task light prototypes designed by students from the Royal College of Art's acclaimed Design Products department. The project brief was set by Ernesto Gismondi, President of Italian lighting company Artemide and directed by Professor Ron Arad, Head of Design Products. The brief was succinct: discover a new type of task light; one that would inherit the mantle from the Anglepoise, and that would be equally iconic. These new prototypes and experimental designs will sit alongside the iconic designs of the past.

Blacklight

The blacklight is everything that a lamp isn't meant to be. It is black. This lamp looks like a solid rubber shape when it is turned off. When it is turned on a transformation starts to take place. This object loses its black shield and becomes a white lighting. This is a process that takes 10 to 15 minutes. Have a look at the movie made of this lamp and see how it works.

Work in progress show RCA, 6 - 10 December 2005

This was the first show for me at the RCA. There have been an enormous amount of visitors, especially at the opening night. For me it was the first opportunity to see all of the other stuff that is been made by my follow students and my first presentation to a broader public than the platform that I'm working in. There have been great reactions but what attracted me the most were the cross-discipline conversations with students from other departments. Because this was a work in progress show it's ideal to see how my ideas communicate with people who are completely unknown with what I'm doing.

Miniature room

The miniature room project is a further development of the rapidform RCA introduction project. Where I used my memory as guide to rebuild my old bedroom and used the rapid prototyping technique as a machine to create very personal objects with strong emotional affection.

Personal Space - Public Space

A larger than life composite image of a very messy and personal private space was superimposed on to the white walls of an impersonal tidy space using 630 printed sheets of A4 paper and a lot of tape. The result: Two rooms for the price of one and a very disorienting experience for the public. In collaboration with Tom price.

Introduction project Design Products Royal College of Art

Rapid prototyping is a three dimensional photo. By scanning and modelling you are able to create something very personal just like a photo. Something that's very dear to you can be captured in a three dimensional form.

This is the video of the first model that is a complete representation of my old bedroom in scale. Again completely made with memory as a guide. Sometimes very accurate and sometimes less precise.

'Design, qe'est-ce que c'est? Viens voir tout simplement!' Artez, 24 June - 5 July 2005 (exhibition)

Artez institue for the Arts Arnhem, Product Design department.

This graduation project makes a setting that is designed for a man. His private space where he can take off his mask and find security. Here he can lay himself in a lovescape and admire his toy puppets. The wall is covered with bright diamond and dollar signs, because this is what he dreams about. The three masks do not give their use directly away but clearly this man wants to protect himself when he goes outside this room.
